Background of the Study
Local storytelling has long been an integral part of cultural expression and community identity in Kano, Kano State. Traditionally conveyed through oral narratives and folk performances, these stories encapsulate the history, values, and social norms of the community. However, modern digital technologies offer innovative ways to preserve and revitalize these cultural narratives. The development of an AI-powered cartoon animation generator presents a novel approach to local storytelling by transforming traditional tales into dynamic, visually engaging animated content (Ahmed, 2023). This system utilizes advanced artificial intelligence to automate the creation of cartoon animations from textual narratives, thereby enabling cultural practitioners to share their stories widely in formats that resonate with today’s digital audiences.
The proposed generator integrates natural language processing, image recognition, and animation rendering techniques to produce high-quality animated stories that reflect the cultural heritage of Kano. This technological innovation not only aids in preserving local folklore but also makes cultural expression more accessible to younger generations, who are more attuned to digital media (Bello, 2024). By reducing the time and cost traditionally associated with animation production, the AI-powered system allows storytellers to experiment with various narrative styles and visual effects while maintaining cultural authenticity. Furthermore, the system has the potential to democratize content creation, enabling individuals with limited technical expertise to produce professional-quality animations. This innovation could stimulate cultural entrepreneurship and economic development within the creative sector. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the AI-powered cartoon animation generator in capturing the nuances of local storytelling, examining its ability to enhance narrative engagement and preserve cultural heritage (Usman, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
The preservation of local storytelling in Kano faces significant challenges in the modern era. Traditional narrative methods, predominantly oral and manually illustrated, are gradually losing relevance amid the rise of digital entertainment. This decline in traditional storytelling has resulted in decreased engagement among younger audiences and a risk of cultural erosion (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the high cost and labor intensity associated with conventional animation production have hindered the widespread digital adaptation of local stories. Consequently, cultural practitioners and storytellers struggle to modernize their narratives without compromising authenticity. In addition, limited research exists on the effectiveness of AI-powered animation tools in maintaining cultural nuances, leading to concerns about automated misinterpretation of traditional elements (Adamu, 2024). This study aims to address these issues by developing an AI-powered cartoon animation generator specifically tailored for local storytelling in Kano, thereby providing a cost-effective and culturally authentic digital medium for narrative preservation.
Objectives of the Study:
To develop an AI-powered system for generating cartoon animations from local storytelling narratives.
To evaluate the cultural authenticity and engagement level of the generated animations.
To assess the system’s potential to promote and preserve local cultural heritage.
Research Questions:
How effectively does the AI-powered system generate cartoon animations that reflect local storytelling traditions?
What is the impact of the generated animations on audience engagement and cultural appreciation?
What challenges are associated with the implementation of AI in local storytelling?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the integration of AI technology with local cultural expression, offering a new medium for preserving and promoting traditional narratives. The findings will provide insights into how digital innovations can revitalize local storytelling and foster cultural continuity in Kano, thereby benefiting both cultural practitioners and the broader community (Nasir, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the development and evaluation of an AI-powered cartoon animation generator for local storytelling in Kano, Kano State. It does not encompass other forms of digital content creation or regions outside Kano.
Definitions of Terms:
AI-Powered Animation Generator: A system that uses artificial intelligence to automate the creation of animated content from narrative inputs.
Local Storytelling: The traditional practice of conveying cultural narratives and folklore within a specific community.
Cartoon Animation: A form of animated visual content that uses stylized drawings to depict characters and stories.
